The people he offered to train were not X-Men potentials. Not yet, anyway. Mia was different. She lived with them, was privvy to their discussions, and was all but a member of their 'team'. It was hard to justify leaving her out forever. All in all, it made her more of a subject of consideration than anyone else he talked to.
